Whilst previously searching for information and finding knowledge were the priorities, the two new modules now enable a more individual supply of information and a more effective transfer of knowledge. The new release concentrates on the requirements of each individual user, providing further opportunities for a customised information supply and an instructive visual presentation of results.

The new dashboard function facilitates access to information relevant to the individual user, on the one hand assembling information selectively with their interests and activities in mind. The content supplied is defined by the user through bookmarks or subscription. On the other hand, the system monitors past user activities, supporting sustainability in the use of this information.
The new dashboard function improves content governance capabilities of the BizSphere Sales Web. There are clear responsibilities for all contents (resources), so that an owner of a specific subject area can constantly monitor his content responsibilities and the need for update or rework.

The new release focuses heavily on context-driven knowledge transfer. The structure of the BizSphere Sales Enablement Solution allows information to be cross-referenced, thus facilitating cross-selling and upselling potential to be displayed. Now, these relations can be specified more extensively. The user is able to determine, for instance, whether the cross- selling opportunity offered is actually relevant to the specific client situation.

The term “sales enablement” appears to have been largely hijacked by a variety of vendors, selling hardware, software, and services, as a means of jumping on the latest, sales-associated, money-making bandwagon.

Savo continues to attempt some level of balance with “professional services” and much to say about their version of sales enablement, but it all still comes across as product marketing and PR. BizSphere takes a more credible, solution-approach. […]”

I track the number of LinkedIn users with Sales Enablement in their current job title. On 5-Feb-2020, LinkedIn had 10,540 users like that globally. Of course that includes many employees of Sales Enablement SaaS software vendors, but nevertheless it more than tripled since August 2015 when I started tracking it. [My blog turns 12 years old in 2021.]

The use of the term Sales Enablement in job titles on LinkedIn hit an all time high just before COVID-19 which also seems to have caused a massive spike in interest (search traffic):

  • How does the solution integrate with the given CRM system?
  • Single-Sign-On (SSO)? Security?
  • Are the rules for how the search feature weights results shared by all client companies or can each client customize?
  • Exit strategy for your content & meta data when you change vendors. Export feature?
  • How does the solution support you to meet the challenges that come with doing business globally? Which languages are supported for the content & for the UI (user interface)?
  • Flexibility for customization / your influence on the roadmap / number of developers at the vendor? Be careful when you get a lot of influence on the roadmap as this might mean you are dealing with an agency / development shop & not a product company – you might be the only customer or the biggest customer & they might go under if they can’t find other customers.
  • Easy to integrate into your existing IT infrastructure / processes?
  • Does the solution help to manage how you show your complex portfolio of products, services, & solutions to your sales people & channel partners? How quickly can that be updated for org changes? Is it the vendor making the changes or is there an editor/admin user interface?
  • Analytics & social features that allow usage metrics & feedback from sales to marketing (ratings/voting/comments) & uploading/sharing of content: Sales User Generated Content (UGC)?
  • Is there an intelligent way to maintain the ‘single source’ of content (or content blocks) being re-used a lot? Can documents be [auto-]generated to be highly customized for the specific sales situation / vertical / geo etc – yet look polished?
  • Is content intelligence as in BI (Business Intelligence) & analytics for the Content Lifecycle) available? Where in its life cycle is my content? What gets bad ratings? What needs to be retired? What isn’t being used? What’s missing? What’s used the most? What closes deals?

Sales Enablement Best Practices – 3 tips for successful sales enablement

3 sales enablement best practices by yours truly:

1. Align the way you name and structure your portfolio of products, services and solutions across all your regions/countries as well as audiences. This doesn’t sound sexy, but it is crucial. The bigger your enterprise is and the more mergers & acquisitions it has been involved in, the more likely you have confusion amongst your different audiences: Regional teams who translate materials into their respective language, partners/channels who you might have a somewhat disconnected portal for, new hires vs. experienced staff in your salesforce, the rest of your workforce or the workforce of companies you merged with, and the public/customers/media/analysts. All these different audiences might use different (old) names to refer to the same product, service or solution, they might not be up-to-date on portfolio/company restructuring, they might try to sell or buy things you have discontinued etc… You might never get to a point where you present the same single one taxonomy to all audiences but at least align and update! Doing that allows for a mapping from customer needs / buyer pain points to your products/services/solutions.

2. Make sure all your sales people and partners/channels have visibility to all cross-selling, up-selling, and other relationships between products, services and solutions in order to make sure no opportunity to sell more is overlooked. Most enterprises fail at providing this kind of data in a complete way because they try to do it in (multiple) Excel files which just aren’t multidimensional and only show a (rarely updated) small part of the highly matrixed organization based on which line of business authored it.

3. Make sure that no piece of collateral and no product/service/solution ever exists without a clear way to contact different experts (product marketing, CI/MI, pricing expert, training expert, etc.) in each region/language. Are you sure everyone in your organization would know who to call for expertise of the kind A for product B, sold in industry vertical C, in language D, in country E, to global account F… Most corporate phone directories and intranets cannot be drilled down into like this. Can yours? When subject matter experts of different types are always shown with their contact details in the context of every piece of collateral and each product/service/solution then people can interact with them to ask questions, leave comments / blog posts… Basically all that knowledge is being created in context and nobody ever feels left alone without experts at their finger tips.

A Case Study

A global telecom company decided to implement a Sales Enablement strategy mid-2006 as part of a larger business transformation initiative to reduce SG&A (selling, general, and administrative expenses of an operating budget) and to address long-standing complaints from the sales force. It was a heavily matrixed, global organization with approximately 450 products, 30 solutions, and more than 90 different professional services, and every seller was expected to sell “everything on the truck.” Information was spread around 20-plus team sites and the corporate-sanctioned sales portal, which hosted more than 6,000 documents distributed among 185 different document types, not to mention the separate competitive and business intelligence sites; installed base sites; and the mix of ordering, pricing, proposal generation, customer relationship management (CRM), and tracking tools. In addition, there was no federated search (no common search platform).

As you can imagine, it took sellers hours to look for basic information (validating numerous studies from several industry analysts). Seller confidence in marketing was low and complaints were high, as was attested to by the yearly seller satisfaction surveys (or dissatisfaction surveys) that had been conducted.”
